FAS Welcomes Matt Hourihan and Launches New Impetus Institute to Advance Federal R&D
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is excited to announce the addition of Matt Hourihan to lead and expand the Federation’s work on research and development (R&D) budget policy, advanced industries, science communication and advocacy, and more.
Matt Hourihan joins FAS as Associate Director of Research & Development and Advanced Industry, after previously directing the R&D Budget and Policy Program for the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a regular source of information and insight on science budgets for policymakers, the science community, industry, and media, and will continue to be a lead voice on R&D issues at his new post at FAS.

In parallel, FAS is launching a new project to support the federal government in making R&D investments that are as strategic, effective, and productive as possible. The FAS Impetus Institute will conduct original analysis to comprehensively examine federal funding for priority science topics, track funding across agencies and programs, and collaborate with scientists and policymakers to assess novel science-funding mechanisms. Matt Hourihan joins the Impetus Institute as its first affiliated expert alongside Adjunct Fellow Dr. Heidi Williams, the Charles R. Schwab Professor of Economics at Stanford University.
